Straw Bonnet-Making Workshop
Course Description

Here is a special opportunity to learn how to make your own authentically constructed and decorated straw bonnet using patterns and techniques that are found in period manuals, fashion magazines and on historic bonnets from the early 19th century.

You will learn the basic techniques of how to make and trim a sewn straw bonnet.  Starting with the ready-made plait (braided straw), you will learn how to sew it into the bonnet shape; how to stiffen, wire and finish the bonnet blank and finally; how to line and decorate your finished bonnet. 

Small class size (6 minimum and 10 maximum) provides ample time for individual attention.  You will also have access to an extensive library of reference material.

When?            May 24-25, 2008 from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm      

Where?           Fort Wellington, Prescott, ON 

How Much?    Registration fee $87.50
                        Kit fee

                        to be about $45-50

Kit includes:

·         Pattern based on one of the three styles below.  If you don't see the style you want, contact Ruth ruthmills@ruthmills.com
to discuss it.

·         Straw plait

·         Thread and needles

·         Wire and other miscellaneous supplies

·         Ideas for trimming

You will need a basic sewing kit and the decorative embellishments to customize your creation.

Registration fee is non-refundable after Friday, May 16/08 but it is transferable.  However, those on waiting list have priority.

* Registration is also payable by VISA but a $3.00 fee must be applied. DO NOT send your VISA number in an email.  VISA registration will be done by phone.

OVWSG ANNUAL EXHIBITION AND SALE

Ruth Mills is offering for sale a collection of winter hats and hat brooches – knitted and felt hats, and decorative brooches for the hat or lapel – combining modern materials and styles with the elegance of traditional millinery at the Ottawa Valley Weavers' and Spinners' Guild's 28th annual exhibition and sale. The sale, showcases 20+ local and regional fibre artists.

When?          Friday, October 31st (4 to 8)
                      Saturday, November 1st (10-5)
                      Sunday, November 2nd (10-4)

Where?         Glebe Community Centre,
                       175 Third Avenue, Ottawa

How Much?   Admission is free.
